The North Belfast Photography Project has helped residents see the space around them ‘in a whole new light’

RESIDENTS living in North Belfast have been encouraged to get creative and photograph the area where they live for a new photographic exhibition.

The ‘This Is Where I Be’ project asked residents of the Deanby, Oldpark, Antrim Road and New Lodge areas to use their mobile phones to see the space around them ‘in a whole new light’.

The participants, aged 15 to 35, were helped by Duncairn Arts Center artist-in-residence Leah Davis, who organized the project and is based at 174 Trust on Antrim Road.

The project gave participants the opportunity “to get out there, meet new people, learn a new skill and really see that with just a little creativity and support, the technology in your pocket can encourage you and inspire you to see the world around you in a whole new light”.

Images chosen for the exhibition are currently on display on the Waterworks railings along Cavehill Road and in Marrowbone Park along the railway tracks on Oldpark Road. The exhibition will open at the Duncairn Arts Center at 6pm on September 13 and will remain on view until October 7.

Speaking to The Irish News, Debbie Young, head of arts operations at Duncairn Arts Centre, said the project aims to show people that “creativity is in everyone’s pockets in terms of mobile phones”.

“They basically walked around North Belfast with the artist-in-residence and they had their mobile phones and took pictures of things they liked,” she said.

“It may encourage them to see where they live in a completely different light. They met Leah and they used free apps to play with the photos and see what special effects they could create. Two of their photos were chosen which we thought reflected their view of North Belfast.

“The arts improve everyday life and creativity is something that every person has within them.”
