The portrait is part of a series that Queensland artist Luther Cora took of his daughter, Giara, from a makeshift studio in his Gold Coast home during lockdown. Cora, a man from Yugambeh/Bundalung, said the photo also reflects his own thoughts on First Nations indigenous people, “and if we are still classified as flora and fauna“, he said. The photographer will receive $5,000, thanks to the David Roche Foundation.

The NPG awards season, including the National Portrait Photography Award and Darling Portrait Award exhibitions, ends October 9. The dates of the call for applications for the 2023 National Photographic Portrait Award will be announced shortly.

The deadline for registrations for the 2023 edition Little Darlings competition, NPGs K-12 portrait award is Friday, October 14. The 2023 theme is ‘Me and my place’, and three winners will be selected in each category. Click on here for all the details.
