Do you find photographic inspiration?

You can spend all the time in the world working on your technique behind the camera and in post-processing, but if you don’t nurture your creative mind in tandem with this technical development, you’ll struggle to create worthwhile images. This excellent video essay will teach you the importance of finding creative inspiration and its impact on your growth as a photographer.

Coming from Alister Benn with Expressive Photography, this fantastic video essay is all about the importance of creative inspiration, and although Benn usually talks about landscape photography, the principles really apply to all genres. I generally believe that most fine artwork is simply a distillation of the artist’s favorite inspirations, all filtered through their unique creative mindset; completely original creations are actually incredibly rare. As such, it’s extremely important to digest the work of many photographers who work in a range of styles. Not only will it inspire you to create compelling photos, but it will help you develop your own unique creative language. After all, we spend a ton of time training our technical abilities, but our creative side needs just as much (if not more) training. Watch the video above for Benn’s full recap.
